PM Kusum Yojana 2025: Farmers Shift to Solar Pumps

Today, we’re going to talk about a government scheme that has made farming easier, cheaper, and smarter for millions of farmers, the PM Kusum Yojana. This scheme is no less than a relief for every farmer troubled by rising diesel costs, power cuts, and irrigation problems.

What is the PM-KUSUM Scheme

PM-KUSUM (Pradhan Mantri Kisan Urja Suraksha Evam Utthan Mahabhiyan) is a significant scheme of the Government of India, aimed at enabling farmers to irrigate with clean solar energy.

PM Kusum YojanaUnder this scheme, farmers receive up to 60% subsidy on installing solar pumps. Diesel is not required to operate the pumps, and importantly, farmers can also earn income by selling excess electricity to the grid if they wish.

How much benefit are farmers receiving

A report from the Ministry of New and Renewable Energy indicates that as of November 30, 2025, 20,42,459 farmers have benefited from the PM Kusum Yojana. Whereas diesel costs previously crippled farming, solar pumps are now providing farmers with lifelong, free energy.

Under the scheme, 10,203 MW of solar power capacity has been installed so far, marking a major step forward in India’s green energy journey. The government is also rapidly investing in this direction. ₹7,106 crore has been released so far.

Which state is leading in PM-KUSUM?

Many states have rapidly adopted the scheme, but Maharashtra has made the largest contribution. 11,21,416 farmers here have benefited from the scheme.

Following this:

  • Rajasthan – Approximately 2.36 lakh beneficiaries
  • Gujarat – Approximately 2.28 lakh
  • Haryana – Approximately 1.80 lakh

India’s largest state, Uttar Pradesh, lags behind, with only 72,000 farmers enrolled in the scheme. The lowest participation is in West Bengal, where only 40 farmers have benefited.

This variation across states suggests that public awareness and simplifying the application process are urgently needed.

Major changes are coming to farmers’ lives

PM Kusum YojanaSolar pumps:

  • Farming costs have reduced
  • Irrigation is no longer dependent on power cuts
